The history of Liljeholmens
In 1839, media figure Lars Johan Hierta and chemist Johan Michaëlson founded Liljeholmen’s Tekniska Fabrik in Sweden, introducing stearin candles to the country. Initially located in Stockholm, the factory moved to Danvikstull in 1841 due to rapid growth. These smokeless, non-drip candles quickly became a luxury item, produced mainly in winter.
Liljeholmens gained international acclaim, including awards at the 1851 London World Exhibition and the 1897 Stockholm Exhibition. Despite the decline in candle use due to gas and electric lighting, the company adapted by diversifying into products like lubricating oils during the World Wars. A renewed interest in candles in the 1960s led to the opening of a larger factory in Oskarshamn in 1970, where Liljeholmens continues to produce high-quality stearin candles.
